Obonye Motokwane
My name is Obonye Motokwane, a young man from Kang in the Kgalagadi District. I currently work as a Design Engineer in Bergstan Consulting & Development Engineers under the Water & Sanitation as well as the Transport & infrastructure Divisions. I am also a fellow of the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation whose main aim is to grow impactful and responsible leaders and entrepreneurs in Southern Africa. I possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Cape Town complemented by Project Management and Procurement & Tendering short courses from the University of Pretoria. My engineering career started in Cape Town where I worked for Martin & East Construction as a Construction supervisor. I then left Cape Town to continue my career back home where I started off as Site Engineer for China Jiangsu International for the Three Grade Separated Interchanges, specifically at the BTV interchange. My stay on that project was cut short when I moved to Bergstan beginning of 2021 where my career has since been shaped and given direction into the Engineer I am becoming now. What inspired me to become and Engineer was when I first flew to Johannesburg during my high school days. The infrastructural advancement around the city caught my eye, and it was instantly something I wanted to see back home. That was when I decided I wanted to be a catalyst to that change and development. Apart from the infrastructure development, one of the most fulfilling moments as an Engineer is seeing the lives of people changing as a result of our work, hence It has been my pleasure to work on projects taking potable water to rural areas, and roads that ensure efficient service delivery to people in remote areas. I enjoy working with younger people, which is something I did a lot back in Cape Town as part of SAICE UCT Student Chapter as well as a young professional. I have grown to achieve some of my goals in the industry as a result of the various individuals I met along the way who shared with me a bit of their time & knowledge, hence it’s my passion to see to it that I pave way for those younger than me especially in the engineering industry.
